MARSHALL Robert & Pearl

Rob & Pearl Marshall in the 1930’s and 40’s

Robert Charles Marshall married Pearl Gwendoline Lily Black on 30th January 1937 at the Albany Methodist Church.

"Returning home to the farm at Broomehill, we went to work for Arthur Dawson who farmed at Toolbrunup. We stayed only twelve months as we found the conditions too primitive. I was by then expecting our first child.
I stayed with my brother Les and his wife, May, in Gnowangerup. May was the daughter of Alf Richards, the son of old pioneers of the town.
Our first child, a daughter, Lynnette Joy was born on 1st March, 1938 at the Gnowangerup Hospital. While Lynnette was still only a few weeks we returned to "Tama Grove" at Broomehill.
The farm was known as "Marshall Bros." and was then owned by two Marshall brothers, Robert Hamilton, who died in 1935, and Norman Eugene, both of whom were miners from Trafalgar, Kalgoorlie. Rob. was appointed executor of his father's estate.

THE WEDDING OF PEARL GWENDOLINE LILY BLACK & ROBERT CHARLES MARSHALL          #2

Robert Senior was married to Lilliot Evelyn Jones and Norman to Coralla Millicent Jones, sisters, who were the daughters of John Samuel Charles and Mary Elizabeth Jones of "Booberoo," Jackitup.
In those days Mary and her daughter Gwen (who later married Bob Kennaugh) used to deliver the mail from Gnowangerup to outlying districts, Jackitup included. She travelled by buggy and pair in all weathers. Two sons, Leslie and Charles ran the farm whilst another son, Clarence, farmed nearby.
Our second daughter, Gladys Evelyn was born at Coleraine Private Hospital in Katanning on 5th October 1939. Our eldest son, Robert William Kenneth was also born at Coleraine on April 9th, 1941.
On this occasion I wasn't aware I was pregnant until I was five months along the way, although I knew my sister-in-law, Phyllis, was. I did everything I could to lighten the load for her, such as dragging a wheat bag full of mallee roots home from the near house paddock and carrying kerosene buckets of water from the tank to place on the open fire to boil her washing.
I also milked two cows, separated the milk and made butter and then made my own bread.

Front Row: PEARL AND ROB

A very surprised doctor delivered a son to Phyllis on the 7th April and my son, Robert arrived on the 9th.
Dr. Pope asked us if we always did everything together, even to bathing in the same tub!
A nurse at the Coleraine hospital named Margaret Herbert, helped in the delivery of our babies. It is interesting to note that she later married Isaac Walker (better known as Zic) and our son Robert was later employed on the staff of the local paper which was owned and run by Isaac and Margaret Walker.”

Robynne Walsh:
Wonderful first person description of life in Broomehill. I believe Dr Pope was a well loved doctor and was based in a Albany. I was close to his wife.
